You’ve heard of the Blue Man Group, the music/comedy show consisting of three men with painted blue skin, right? As it turns out, the Blue Man Group may have some competition.
The Fugate family in Kentucky has had blue skin dating back about 150 years. Martin Fugate settled in Kentucky in 1820 but stood out from other settlers due to his blue-tinged skin. The condition was also genetic, resulting in four blue Fugate babies (who each had their own blue babies).
It turns out that the Fugates had a rare blood disorder known as methemoglobinemia, which causes patients’ lips to be purple, skin to be bluish, and blood to be chocolate colored. The disorder affects the ability of the blood to carry oxygen.
Fortunately, if you ever develop blue skin, you can rest assured that your Wisconsin health insurance policy will protect you. Our agents are here to create a customized policy for you and your family.
