According to the National Motorist Association, June is Lane Courtesy Month. Basically, Lane Courtesy Month is a time to acknowledge the practice of moving over or yielding to faster moving traffic. Slower drivers have always been encouraged to drive in the right lane, out of courtesy for faster drivers. However, over the past several years this notion has deteriorated.
Lane Courtesy Month is a time to reflect on the principal of safe driving. Practicing lane courtesy means you are less likely to be in an accident, you’ll get better gas mileage, you’ll get to your destination faster, and you will not have to deal with road rage. Blocking the left lane can cause accidents and make it less safe for everyone involved. Yielding to traffic is a simple concept; however, it is often times forgotten.
Take the time during the next month to remember to yield to faster traffic and move into the right lane. It’s also a good time to review common driver etiquette that we all forget sometimes.
Try to avoid:
• Passing somebody while using your cruise control. If you are passing somebody who is in the right lane, accelerate so that you are not slowing anybody up that is behind you.
• Don’t keep your brights on when passing another car. This can impair the vision of upcoming traffic.
• Stop texting, eating, talking on the phone, and listening to music too loud when behind the wheel.
• There is no need to tailgate. Many people do not even realize that they can get a ticket for tailgating or “following to close”. These traffic tickets can be $100+.
June is not the only month you should practice lane courtesy, but you should every month. Driver safety is extremely important and is what helps keep our roads secure.
