Free fishing weekend in Wisconsin begins on Saturday, January 17th and runs until Sunday, January 18th. Residents and nonresidents are welcome to fish for free anywhere in Wisconsin, without a license, this weekend. Included in the free fishing weekend are the inland waters, Wisconsin side of the great lakes and Mississippi River.
Invite your family and friends to go enjoy this fun Wisconsin winter activity. If you plan on going ice fishing, make sure you stay safe.
- Make sure the ice is at least 4 inches thick before walking on it. If you are taking a snowmobile, ATV or other vehicle, the ice should be at least 5 inches thick.
- Dress in multiple layers to stay warm. Wear wool hats, mittens, and waterproof boots. You may even want to bring hand warmers for your hands and feet. A blanket is also a good idea.
- Keep a watchful eye on the amount of daylight you have and the weather conditions. Try to stay oriented on a large lake to avoid getting lost.
- Never go out fishing alone. Instead, bring friends along and always have a cellphone with you.
We hope you have a safe and fun time ice fishing this weekend. Make sure to check back here every Friday for this week’s edition of the Weekend Beat.
