Once the holiday season comes, many companies know that business is always booming. Due to an increase in sales, this means more employees are needed for extra help. According to the Wausau Daily Herald, Chicago-based outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said retailers across the country will add the same number or fewer workers from October through December of this year as they did during the same period last year.
The firm based its estimate on slow retail sales reported for August and a general lack of consumer confidence. Last year, Marathon County added 400 retail jobs during the last three months of the year, and 627,600 seasonal workers were hired nationwide during the same period. National chains, such as Target and Walmart, are expected to do the most hiring this season.
At the Target in Weston, assistant manager Don Kulinski said the store is on track to hire 40 to 50 seasonal workers beginning in October. Kulinski said Target will need workers to unload trucks, stock shelves, tend the sales floor, and work as cashiers. Each will be hired for between 24 and 40 hours each week.
Some smaller businesses will also be increasing staffing for the season, but not just for the holidays. At Shepherd & Schaller Sporting Goods in downtown Wausau, owners roughly double the size of the store’s workforce during the winter. This is done to handle the customers needing ski and snowboard equipment and service.
Co-owner Theresa Shepherd said anywhere from 8 to 10 part-time workers are added each season. “We do have staffing already in place,” she said. “In some respects, it’s seasonal; we hire in August for (the) winter.”
